CFISD celebrates Black History Month

During the month of February, CFISD celebrated Black History Month to honor those who have contributed to American society, culture and education.

Community members remembered the impact and influence of Carverdale School and the students and staff that affected change and progress in the district.

Campuses celebrated Black History Month and shared their celebrations on Twitter using #CFISDBlackHistory:

Bleyl Middle School Bleyl Middle School's YMPA Step Team, "The Formula,"  hosted a pep rally showcasing a special Black History performance that taught students the history of step. Step was originally created as a source of communication by African miners who were not allowed to talk while they worked. Today step is used as a form of entertainment and unity in many African American sororities and fraternities.

Holbrook Elementary School
Holbrook ES rounded out Black History Month with a celebration of Black Houston heroes. Students, staff and community members enjoyed songs from the Holbrook ES choir and participating in interactive activities like an "I Have A Dream..." wall.

Students created a living wax museum of Black Houston where they shared facts with the attendees about a Black Houston hero they researched. Selfie booths and the Holbrook ES art gallery were also highlights of the night.

If your campus or community celebrated Black History Month in a unique way, share the event on social media using #CFISDBlackHistory month, or email the details of your story to communication@cfisd.net.
